Web Hosts

I spend a lot of time on the Internet, and a lot of that time is in technical sites and forums related to website building, and other computer technology topics.  In amongst those areas, I come across a lot of recommendations for hosting companies - the businesses who provide us all with somewhere to place our websites, and through which to route our emails under our own domain names, rather than relying on providers like Hotmail, Yahoo etc.

The following list is my initial collection of web hosts recommended by web admins and techs.  It comes with no guarantees or personal recommendations, it is provided simply to give you somewhere to start comparing what is available.  You might find it useful to read through the WebAdmin 101 & 102 series of BuildaSkill blog articles before committing to a web host, especially if you’re hoping to develop an advanced site.

Cautions

Many success factors for a web site depend on the quality of the Website Hosting Provider (webhost).  Reliability, loading speed, and protection against offline & online threats, all make a good service offering.  Evaluating any reseller website hosting plan or dedicated host’s performance history is vital.  Any web hosting services list depends on the basic features that hosts offer, however these are subject to change by the webhost, and you should check their current offers.

Price is often a determiner, but shouldn’t be the only one.

Bandwidth limitations and number of domains hosted per account may make a significant distinction between one webhost’s package, and that from another at the same price.

Some levels of hosting service may be full of programs or applications you need, some may have only bare-bones rack space. Keep in mind who will be doing the website administration and what their required levels are for support from the webhost.  Remember too, that the cheaper the hosting, the more likely it is to have service and usage restrictions - particularly CPU and RAM resource limits that busy websites could easily exceed, at which point you will be badgered to upgrade your hosting package to something more expensive.  If you reach such limits too quickly, you may be better to change webhosts, rather than upgrade your hosting package.

Do not compromise on features and quality of web host services as they can determine the success or failure of your website and online endeavours.

The list below is a work-in-progress and will grow over time, both in length and detail.
