vzaar adds streaming audio & podcasts to portfolio

Video-in-auction service vzaar have blogged that they’ve had a number of requests of late for audio to be added to their list of compatible file types.
They’ve now made the necessary changes, which means you can now stream sound files in mp3 format.
They state this is perfect if you have -
- an audio file you want to share (perhaps you are a musician and you want to show off your talents!)
- a podcast you want to share with your listeners
- a company jingle, advert or PR you want your buyers to listen to
Once uploaded, vzaar return the file in a player that displays an image somewhere around the 234×60 pixel size (Guys – it would be nice to know these things when you blog them – is it, or is it not, the IAB industry-standard size of 234×60 pixels? It makes a difference to us website builders and managers.)
The size of player remains constant at present regardless of which size player you opt for at upload says the blog post, implying it may be size-adjustable at a later date.

Hi Ed,
The player size for audio players is 334×86. We should have mentioned this in the blog, and in our help pages, but didn’t think too. We’ll update this next week to make sure we mention the file size.
The player size for audio is fixed right now, although their is no reason it shouldn’t be user adjustable (within minimum limits). Right now it isn’t a priority for us, and we have some other things on the plate, but I’ll certainly feed it into our system where we track ideas and thoughts for changes.
Of course customer demand will also drive changes and moving this up the list, but right now very few people are using the audio player, as it’s only just been released.

The reason I mentioned the IAB standard size, is that I can see possibilities for “audio ads” used with self-hosted banner and advert servers (e.g. OpenX) – would certainly make the multimedia interactivity side of the Internet a lot more interesting.
On that theme, having smaller video players to fit the T.V. shaped IAB Ad sizes would be great too – i.e. the 120×90, 125×125, 250×250, 300×250, 300×300 – these are all industry standard sizes for banner and image ads (Google Adsense even does text ads in those same sizes) and are common slots reserved for ads on websites built upon blog software, or “sidebar scripts” such as osCommerce and the like.
Might be something worth kicking around in a brainstorming session?

The IAB sizes is good point. I think we’ll look to allow manual changing of sizes of things like the audio player.
Allowing for video in IAB sizes is a little more complex, as to preserve quality, we need to keep the video ratio the same as the source (or letter box, or crop). Of course with out “original” encoding feature, users can always upload a video in any size (e.g. 300×250) and by selecting original, the output format sizes will be the same as original.
We’ll definitely add IAB sizes to the brainstorming sessions, but probably put this on the back burner till we can do this properly and look at how to work these solutions into the UI without adding additional complexity.
