Now eBay Oz takes back-door stab at PayPal-only
By Ed | November 15th, 2008 | Category: eBay AU |Still smarting from the slap issued by the ACCC case earlier this year, eBay Australia have fallen back on the route to PayPal-only that has worked so duplicitously well in the UK - incentivising buyers to insist the seller accepts payment through the service.
An announcement yesterday on the eBay Oz Announcement Board heralds the chance for buyers to win AU $10,000 each day if they buy an item and pay with PayPal. Purchases and [payments have to be complete by 23rd November, and for any buyer making 3 or more purchases, there’s a chance to win an AU $30,000 jackpot prize.
Still unresolved on the Australian site is the much protested enforcement that all sellers must offer PayPal as one of the Payment options - an eBay move earlier this year that facilitates them running promotions of this nature, and from which I would guess that the enforced offering has not led to any significant increase in take-up of using PayPal.
There is of course no guarantee that this promotion will encourage use of the payment service, the Aussies are still pretty fired up about the attempt to force them into using only that service. In fact this promotion may just prove counter-productive. If Australians see through this promotion as a back door route to converting eBay.com.au »”>eBay.com.au into a solely PayPal venue, they may just boycott the method during the rest of the Christmas season.
